Zantedeschia

Soprano sax and live electronics
2024

Zantedeschia (or Calla lily) is characterized by an oxymoric symbolism, representing candor and purity in some popular traditions, while lust and phallic energy in others.

The coloured funnel-shaped part, which is commonly identified with the flower, is actually a modified leaf. It has the function of protecting the orange spadix, the actual inflorescence.

The piece reflects the morphology of the plant: a great timbral accumulation that first hides, then leaves space to a vital instrumental gestuality.

The piece is dedicated to Alberto Cavallaro.
